Methods & Trends

Research Framework

One of the goals in the UFA's Strategic Plan is to identify money laundering and terrorist financing trends in the Asia/Pacific region. The strategies to achieve this goal include:

  • Developing and maintaining an UFA programme of research to identify and analyse priority AML/CFT issues and case studies;
  • Supporting and promoting the work of UFA project groups to explore and address specific issues; and
  • Supporting and providing education and information exchange programmes to share the findings of project groups.

In addition to the UFA's Strategic Plan, the UFA has a strategic framework for the collection, analysis and dissemination of typologies information. The framework places a responsibility on UFA members and observers to consider and analyse typologies information in four ways:

  • to establish a working group (the UFA Operations Committee) to undertake analyses of typologies topics;
  • to produce analytical reports or summaries of typologies subjects;
  • to convene annual typologies workshops; and
  • to publish annual typologies reports.

Each year typologies workshops bring together law enforcement experts and regulatory authorities to exchange information on cases and operations. It also provides an opportunity for experts to identify and describe effective AML/CFT counter-measures.
